How to Get There

Waigeo Island of Raja Ampat, West Papua is located in remote island that can be reach by sea and air. From/To Jakarta (CGK) – Sorong (SOQ) – (transit in Makasar (UPG). The airline companies operating are Garuda Indonesian Airways, Lion Group (Lion, Batik, Wings Air), Sriwijaya Air/NAM Air, and Express Air.
From Sorong – Waigeo/Waisai can be reach by ferry and airline (Susi Air and Wings Air).


Waisai is the capital of Raja Ampat Regency, which located in Waigeo Island. Phone network available is mainly Telkonsel Indonesia, Hotel, resort, and homestay, Public electricity is only exist in the capital. In the resort/ homestay is using generator power for electricity needs. For transportation is mainly speedboat and rented cars (four wheels drive vehicle is limited in the area of Waigeo). Restorants and hotels are only exist in the capital town – most of the resorts/homestays are located outside of capital town. There are harbor and airport in Waigeo.

 Birding Sites

Birding in Waigeo can be done in the Western Waigeo Forest and Eastern Waigeo Forest and some satellite islands such as mangrove forest around Waigeo Main Island.
The birding spots, normally managed by locals which some area has their own customary right so that bird guides/operators may have their own spots.
To reach birding sites, the birder can use rented cars, rented motorbike, and walk. The distance of spots is varying depending where accommodation located – from 10 minutes to 25 minutes by cars. The road condition is good, but some road is rough. From the main road to spots of bird watching is about 15 minutes – an hour’s walk.
There is a charge of birding spots/fees that managed by locals – the fee is about 200.000 – 300.000 IDR/person/visit.

Tour operator operated in the area is from Sorong and or other part of Indonesia such as Bali, Sulawesi, and Java. The local tour operator is Raja Ampat Ecotour, which is based in Waisai Raja Ampat. Raja Ampat Ecotour is managing tour trip in Waigeo, Batanta and Misool Islands of Raja Ampat.
Raja Ampat Ecotour is organizing Birding Tour of Waigeo and Sorong Lowland Forest. The tour trip is all inclusive (transportation, accommodation in the resort, guiding/local trained guides, porters, entrance fees, meals). To whom interested on diving, snorkeling and islands hopping, the tour trip can be combined with birding tour. Raja Ampat Ecotour is keen to promote community based ecotourism in the area.
